About A. Philip Randolph
A. Philip Randolph was an American civil rights leader known for being the founder and first president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which became the first predominantly black labor union in the United States. He is also known for the instrumental roles he played in bringing an end to racial discrimination in the American Armed forces and defense industries.
Achievements
He was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. He is an inductee into the Labor Hall of Fame and the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame.
Family Life
He was the son of Elizabeth Robinson and Reverend James William Randolph. In 1913, he married Lucille Campbell Green. The marriage produced no children.
Trivia
In 1968, he was mugged by three men just outside his apartment.
Even though his father was a reverend, he grew up to become an atheist.
