About A.r. Ammons
The American poet had a career spanning above five decades. He was widely known for his works on human relationships with nature and his humorous and subtle tone of writing. Some of his famous poems include “Corsens Inlet” (1962 ), “Expressions of Sea Level” (1964), “Collected Poems” (1951- 1971).
Ammons served as a faculty member at Cornell University in 1964 and would later become Goldwin Smith Professor of English and Poet in Residence.
Family
He and Phyllis Plumbo married in 1949.
Education
He was an alumnus of Wake Forest University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in English.
Honors
The poet was the recipient of numerous awards, including the annual “National Book Award for Poetry” in 1973 and 1993. He was also honored with the Wallace Stevens Award presented by the Academy of American Poets in 1998.
In 1978, Ammons was voted a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
