About Abdus Salam
Mohammad Abdus Salam made his mark as one of the most distinguished physicists to emanate from the Islamic world.
The Pakistani theoretical physicist is best known for his work on electroweak unification along with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Glasgow.
He contributed to Pakistan’s science infrastructure development while serving as the Ministry of Science and Technology’s scientific advisor from 1960 to 1974.
Abdus Salam is also known for theories such as the Grand Unified Theory, the Pati-Salam model, Goldstone boson and magnetic photon.
Family Life
He was raised in a Punjabi Ahmadiyya Muslim family as the son of Hajira Hussain and Chaudhry Muhammad Hussain. He had two wives; the first was his cousin Amtul Hafeez Begum, whom he married in 1949 and the second was British biochemist Louise Johnson. His two marriages produced six children.
Achievements
He was a co-recipient of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. He also won a Copley Medal, Smith’s Prize, Lomonosov Gold Medal, Royal Medal, Smith’s Prize, and Hughes Medal.
Death
He died from progressive supranuclear palsy on November 21, 1996.
