About Abédi Pelé
The Ghanaian-born former midfielder served as the captain of the Black Stars, the men’s senior national team of Ghana. He is one of the most iconic African footballers to impact club football in Europe.
Abedi Ayew was born in Kyebi, Eastern Region, Ghana. He later moved to Dome, a suburb of Accra. He attended the Ghana Senior High School in Tamale.
Career in Football
In 1982, he joined the Black Stars, winners of the 1982 African Cup of Nations in Libya. He played for Ghana in the African Leagues of the early ‘80s. Later, he travelled to Europe and played for Chamois Niort and then for Marseille Football Club in France.
He got married to Maha. They shared 3 sons who were also footballers. They are Rahim, André and Jordan. All three sons of his have played in varying roles for Ghana. André, for example, captained Ghana on so many times, including at the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
He was nicknamed "Pele” because his football prowess reminded many fans of the great Pele of Brazil.
He was the African Footballer of the Year for 3 consecutive years.
Abedi ranked 9th at the FIFA World Player of the Year Awards in 1992.
He was the Ghana Footballer of the Year in 1993.
With Marseille, he won the UEFA Champions League in 1993. The French side defeated Italian giants AC Milan.
