About Abraham Baldwin
Abraham Baldwin was an American politician who played a key role in US history as one of the Founding Fathers who signed the US Constitution.
Early Years & Education
Baldwin was born in North Guilford, Connecticut. He attended Yale College when he was 14 where he studied theology. After he graduated, he decided to stay in school to work as a tutor before joining the Continental Army in 1779 as a chaplain. After the Revolutionary War (1775-1783), he studied law and was called to the bar.
Entry into Politics
In 1783, Baldwin moved to Georgia, established his law practice, and subsequently entered politics after winning a seat in the Georgia Assembly. In 1799, he was elected US Senator and served as the President pro tempore of the US Senate until his death in 1807.
Legacy
Baldwin County in Georgia and Alabama, as well as the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, were named after him.
