Abraham Lincoln was an American politician and lawyer best remembered as the 16th President of the United States. He served as President from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. During his tenure as President, he led the United States through the bloody Civil War and went on to positively transform the nation's economy in no small way. One of his greatest achievements as President was his success in abolishing slavery, which he achieved by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. As a result of his enormous achievements, he is consistently included in the list of the three greatest American presidents of all time.
In 1842, he married Mary Todd, with whom he fathered four sons, only one of whom lived to adulthood. He remained married to Mary until his death in 1865.
He was assassinated on Good Friday at Ford's Theater by a popular actor named John Wilkes.
The day before his assassination, he reportedly told one of his bodyguards that he had been having recurring dreams of being assassinated.
