Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was an infamous Jordanian jihadist and brutal terrorist leader. He earned notoriety when he formed the “Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad” terrorist group in 1999 and took responsibility for several series of bombing attacks and beheadings in the Iraq War.
Background & Early Life
He grew up in the neighborhoods of Zarqa, Amman. Zarqawi had a sturdy personality and often chose to express himself briefly. However, due to economic hardship, he dropped out of high school, became a street thug, and was also involved in several petty crimes during his youth.
Criminal History
In 2009, he formed the “Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad” terrorist group. He strongly opposed the involvement and presence of the USA army and Western military troops in the Islamic countries. He organized several attacks against US troops in Iraq and caused the “Shia-Sunni civil war.”
He became a member of Al-Qaeda in 2004 and swore allegiance to the infamous Osama Bin Laden. In September 2005, Zarqawi declared war on the Shi’ites of Iraq. He dispatched several suicide bombers in critical areas in Iraq to attack US soldiers and Shia militias. It was reported that he was responsible for bombing the three Amman Hotels in 2005.
Death
He died at age 40. He was killed by a joint American force in a “targeted killing” master plan on 7th June 2006, while he was in a secret meeting in a safe house at Hibhib, Baqubah.
