About Adam Oates
For almost two decades, Adam Oates thrilled fans of the National Hockey League with his outstanding performances and creativity. Before announcing his retirement in 2004, the Canadian had recorded a little over 1,000 assists which placed him among the top five assisters in the history of the league.
He was drafted into the league in 1985 by the Detroit Red Wings. Mostly used at the center position, Oates featured for other prominent teams in the league including Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, and Edmonton Oilers.
As a coach
Oates didn’t leave the sport entirely after ending his playing career. Ahead of the 2009/2010 NHL season, he was hired by the Tampa Bay Lightning as one of their assistant coaches. The following year, he signed for the New Jersey Devils. He played a crucial role in the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2012.
That same year, he joined the Washington Capitals as the head coach. He returned to the Devils in 2012 and served in a position termed as “co-head coach”.
Family
His parents, Loretta and David, supported him at the beginning of his career. He spent his childhood days with his sisters Laurel and Michelle. At one stage, he was engaged to Darlene Vogel, a renowned actress.
Education
Before joining the league, he was a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hockey team. He returned to the school for his Bachelor of Science program.
Achievements
He was named in 5 NHL All-Star Games. His name appeared on the “100 Greatest NHL Players list in 2017. Five years before that, he was ushered into the famous Hockey Hall of Fame.
Trivia
Growing up, he played box lacrosse. He played in the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior A Lacrosse League.
He has also worked with Boston Capital Partners, an investment firm.
