About Adolf Loos
Austrian architect Adolf Loos is regarded as one of Europe’s most influential architects of the late nineteenth century. Initially an enthusiast of the Vienna Secession art movement, he abandoned it in favor of plain and unembellished architecture. He is also known to have pioneered modernism through his designs. His best-known buildings include Looshaus in Vienna, Austria and Villa Muller in Prague, Czech Republic.
Personal Life
He had three failed marriages. The first was in 1902 to Lina Loos, a drama student. They divorced in 1905. 14 years later, he married Austrian dancer and actress Elsie Altmann, who was 20 years old at the time. The marriage ended in 1926. His third wife was the Czechoslovakian photographer and writer Claire Beck, whom he married in 1929 and divorced in 1932. He was involved in a pedophilia case in 1928, when it came to light in court that he had sexually abused several 8-10 year-old girls.
Death
He died on August 23, 1933, a few months after he had a stroke.
