Arguably one of the most commercial Turkish singers, Pekkan hopped onto the Turkish music scene in the mid-1960s and established herself as one of the most iconic figures of the time. In the golden age of her career, she held concert tours and earned a plethora of awards. One of her biggest songs, “Bi Tik” was released in 2021 and topped the charts.
The Istanbul-born singer was nicknamed “Superstar” by the Turkish media because of the diva quality that marked her performances. Between 1968 and 2020, she recorded over 20 albums and sold more than 28 million records globally. She is well-known as an activist and has added her voice to end abuse, illiteracy and domestic violence.
Early Life and Acting Career
Born in Istanbul to a naval officer father, Ajda Pekkan had the first taste of stardom when she joined the music group Los Çatikos. In the early 1960s, she developed a passion for acting. In her attempt to make her dreams a reality, she landed a lead role in her debut film “Adanali Tayfur” in 1963. She starred in 8 films in 1964 and even more films in the following year. Notable among her film credits are “Pantolo Bankasi,” “Cici Sizlar” and “Dalgaci Mamut.”
Music Career
As the years went by, her reputation soared. However, she made a 180 and reconnected with her first love for music. By 1967, she had released her first single, “Her Kar var Yerde,” and peaked the charts with another single “Iki Yabanci.”
In the prime of her career in 1977, she released an album titled “Superstar.” At the same time, she performed “A Mes Amours” at the Yamaha Film Festival in Tokyo. Her international acclaim made her attractive enough to be selected to represent Turkey at the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest.
In 1982, she collaborated with Metin Akpinar and Zeki Alasya and performed in the Istanbul Open-Air Theater. She recorded another single “Yucca Sheeran” in 2011 which ranked number 2 on the Turkey official music charts. She followed that up with her album “Farkin Bu”, which was received very well. It was number 1 on D&R list of best-selling records in Turkey. One feature of her music is their depiction of the strength in women.
Personal Life
She could very well be a world record-holder for the shortest celebrity marriage ever. Her marriage to Coşkun Sapmaz ended in just six days. Seven years later, she found love again in the arms of journalist Ali Bars. They got divorced in 1990.
Awards
In 2013, the International Eurasian Institute presented her with the Art-Cultural and Human Award. In the same year, the French ambassador to Turkey awarded her the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
In 1998, the Turkish Ministry of Culture granted her the honor of "Artist of State" for her enduring contributions to music.
Trivia
She mentioned that her decision not to have any children represented the biggest sacrifice she ever made for her music career.
