About Al Freeman
This African American actor made his mark in his memorable portrayals of such historical figures as Malcom X. He is also best known for his award-winning role as Captain Ed Hall in the soap opera “One Life to Live”.
Early Life & School
Born in San Antonio, Texas, he studied drama at Los Angeles City College. He later relocated to New York to start a career in theater. While in NYC, he won a part in the 1960 Broadway play “The Long Dream”, which was an adaptation of Richard Wright's novel.
Media Highlights
In 1964, he got another gig to play the lead in James Baldwin's play, “Blues for Mister Charlie.” Seven years later, he showed up in “Look to the Lillies,” a musical adaptation of the film “Lillies of the Field”.
He became a regular on his debut TV series “Suspicions”. In 1972, he starred alongside Mary Kay Adams and Denny Albee in “One Life to Live.” His motion picture credits include, “Down in the Delta,” “The Detective” and “The Lost Man.”
Personal Life
He and wife Sevara E. Clemon were married for 52 years before his death in 2012.
Legacy
In 2014, the Environment Theatre Space at Howard University was renamed in his honor.
