Al Murray, in full Alastair James Hay Murray is a famous English comedian, musician, writer and actor. Since 1994, he has graced British radio and TV with his superb stand-up comedy performances, earning various accolades and recognitions.
Background & Education
He was born in Buckinghamshire, England. He is an old student of Bedford School. Murray is an avid historian and his passion for the subject led him to obtain a degree in Modern History from St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
Career Highlights
His comedic career began in the 1990s, as he began to tour with other great comedians such as Frank Skinner and Harry Hill.
He later became a regular performer at the “Edinburgh Fringe Festival”. In 1999, he was honored with the “Perrier Award” at the festival, having lost on nominations from 1996 to 1998. His “Pub Landlord” character became a famous comedic character at the festival and in Britain. He has starred on ITV’s “Al Murray’s Happy Hour” and the popular sitcom “Time Gentlemen Please”.
As a musician, Murray has played drums for “Club Zarathustra”, “Evangelista” and Stewart Lee’s house band.
Politics
In 2015, he contested and lost the elections as a “FUKP” candidate for the parliamentary seat of South Thanet. This political move garnered widespread media and national attention.
