Early Life & School
A Sarzeau native, he lost both parents when he was still young. He attended Collège de Vannes and later studied law in Paris.
Notable Works
A novelist by age 27, he was adept at translating Spanish literature by such writers as Calderon and Francisco de Rojas Zorilla. He was also involved in the adaptation of novels for plays. He got his lucky break in the early 1700s with “Crispin, rival de son maître,” a one-act drama. Inspired by its success, he went on to publish the bestseller “Le Diable Boiteux.”
Other writing credits include “Lesage et le picaresque,” “La Poétique d'Alain-René Lesage,” “Lesage et le théâtre de la foire” and “Lesage; ou, le métier de romancier.”
Family
He met Marie-Elisabeth in Paris. The two tied the knot in 1694 and had 4 children together.
