About Alan Bean
Bean was one of the crew members on the Apollo 12 mission, he became the 4th person in history to step on the Moon. The American aeronautical engineer joined NASA in 1963 as a component of Astronaut Group 3. In 1973, he made his final journey to space as part of the Skylab 3 project.
Career in the navy and other works
In 1949, after his high school education, Bean joined the United States Naval Reserve. Six years later, he became a member of the American Navy. He successfully went through his flight training and was later assigned to the Attack Squadron 44 in Jacksonville.
Bean went into painting after leaving NASA. Most of his works depicted things in outer space. Some of his most popular paintings were titled “Rock and Roll on the Ocean of Storms” and “Lunar Grand Prix”.
Family
He was raised by his parents Frances Caroline Murphy and her husband Arnold Horace Bean. He had two kids with his wife Leslie Bean.
Education
After completing R. L. Paschal High School in 1949, the famous astronaut enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin.
Decorations
During his active days, he received many awards including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Godfrey L. Cabot Award. He was also inducted into a number of halls such as the International Air & Space Hall of Fame, the International Space Hall of Fame and the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Fun facts
Canadian actor Dave Foley portrayed his character in HBO’s 1998 miniseries titled “From the Earth to the Moon”.
He also published many literatures with some titled “Apollo: An Eyewitness Account” and “My Life As An Astronaut”.
