About Alan Kulwicki
Alan Dennis Kulwicki was his birth name, and he was one of the greatest American auto racing drivers in history. Dubbed "Polish Prince" and "Special K," Kulwicki set various records in the "NASCAR" event in the late 20th century, and his scientific and engineering approach to racing has inspired many NASCAR teams today.
Early Life & Education
He was born and raised in Greenfield, Wisconsin. Kulwicki was educated at Pius XI High School and held a BSc degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Career Highlights
From day one, he was a determined racer and won the "1986 NASCAR Rookie of the Year" award. Kulwicki's determination eventually led to his first victory at the "Phoenix International Raceway" in 1988 and the launch of his trademark celebration, "Polish Victory Lap."
His notable season was the 1992 NASCAR championship, in which he overcame a 278-point lead in the last six races to win the tournament. He had secured two wins, 17 top-ten finishes, and 11 top-five spots to defeat fellow racing driver Bill Elliot with only "10 points" – one of the closest championship margins in history.
Death & Honors
On April 1, 1993, he sadly died in a fatal airplane accident while returning from Knoxville. He was 38 years old.
Kulwicki was posthumously inducted into the "NASCAR Hall of Fame" and the "International Motorsports Hall of Fame."
