About Alan Shepard
Alan Shepard Jr. was an astronaut, test pilot and naval aviator. He cemented his name in history books for being the first person from the United States to go to space. A member of the Original Seven, he piloted the Mercury-Redstone 3, the first human spaceflight of Project Mercury, on May 5, 1961. Ten years later, as the pilot of the Apollo Lunar of the Apollo 14 mission, Shepard walked on the moon.
Family Life
He was the son of Pauline Renza Emerson and Alan B. Shepard Sr., who fought in World War I and II as a member of the United States Army. His younger sister’s name was Pauline. He was married to Louise Brewer, with whom he had two daughters; Julie and Laura.
Achievements
He received the “Congressional Space Medal of Honor” in 1978. Other honors conferred on him include the “Langley Gold Medal”, “Cabot Award” and his induction into the International Space Hall of Fame.
Death
He passed away on July 21, 1998, from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia complications.
