About Albert Coons
Immunologist Albert Coons was the first to create a unique naming technique for identifying antibodies in the 1940s.
Background
He was born to Albert Selmser and Marion Coons in Gloversville, New YORK. Coons received his doctor of medicine degree from Harvard Medical School and then worked at the Massachusetts General Hospital as a resident.
While travelling in Germany, Coons developed a theory on how to label antibodies and returned home to work on the project. His findings earned him the 1959 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award.
He also served in the US Army Medical Corps from 1942 to 1946. In 1971, he was made professor at the Department of Pathology at Harvard University. He died of a heart attack in 1978.

Coons was married to Phyllis Coons and had five children, Albert, Elizabeth, Susan, Hilary and Wendy.
