About Alcee L. Hastings
Alcee L. Hastings, in full Alcee Lamar Hastings, was a well-known American jurist and Democrat politician. He was the first black American federal judge in Florida State. Unfortunately, he was impeached and removed from the American bench in 1989 due to bribery allegations.
Early Life & Education
He received his education at Crooms Academy, Howard University, Fisk University, and Florida A&M University of College of Law. However, he held BA degrees in botany and zoology from Fisk and a law degree from Florida A&M University. He began to practice law in 1963 after being called to the bar.
Judicial Career & Conviction
He was named as the Broward County, Florida circuit court judge in 1977. In October 1979, the US Senate confirmed him as a jurist of the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida after ex-US President Jimmy Carter nominated him in August.
Although a criminal trial acquitted him in 1983, unfortunately, in 1988, the US House of Representatives impeached him for perjury and bribery. The US Senate convicted him in October 1989. He was then disbarred.
Political Career
He was a Democrat politician and represented Florida's 20th and 23rd congressional districts between 1993 and 2021.
Cause of Death
He died from pancreatic cancer in 2021.
