About Alcide De Gasperi
In December 1945, a few months after World War II ended, Alcide de Gasperi was elected Prime Minister of Italy. He is recognized as one of the founding fathers of the European Union and played a key role in restoring Europe after the war.

Gasperi’s election into office was unique in that he served as the last prime minister when Italy was a monarchy and became the first to serve when the country transitioned into a republic. He is also one of the longest-serving prime ministers in Italian history. During his time in office, Gasperi improved diplomatic relations with allies and the United States. He also helped Italy transition into a democracy. Italy also became a member of NATO, as well as the European Coal and Steel Community, which later became the EU.
Personal Life
Gasperi married Francesca Romani in 1894 and they had four daughters. He died in 1954.
