About Alek Wek
Alek Wek developed a love for modeling after she migrated to Britain in an attempt to move away from the civil war in her native country, Sudan. Her breakthrough came in 1995 after she was unearthed by an agent of Models 1. That same year, she was featured in Tina Turner’s "GoldenEye" before she was signed by Ford Models the following year.
As one of the prominent models of her era, she has been featured in many publications including Glamour, Cosmopolitan, and Ebony. In 2015, she participated in the New York Fashion Week as a rep for Marc Jacobs. She also owns a fashion brand called "Wek 1933".
Other works
Wek has worked for many charity organizations such as World Vision, UNICEF, and the United States Committee for Refugees Advisory Council. She was also named a judge on the reality show “America's Next Top Model” in 2011.
Family
She is one of nine children of Athian and Akuol. In 2013, her 12 years relationship with Italian estate agent Riccardo Sala came to an end. Sudanese-American model Ataui Deng is her niece.
Education
She was trained at the London College of Fashion.
Achievements
In 1997, MTV named her "Model of the Year". She was also included in the “100 Women” list compiled by BBC in 2015.
