About Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Russian novelist Aleksandr Isayevich Solzhenitsyn lived as a stateless person from 1974 until 1990 because he angered the Soviet Union’s leaders with the novels “August 1914”, “Cancer Ward” and “The Gulag Archipelago”.
A known vocal critic of the Soviet Union, the novelist and philosopher had previously been imprisoned in a labour camp and internally exiled for a total of eight years before losing his citizenship.
Family Life
He was the son of Isaakiy Semyonovich Solzhenitsyn and Taisiya Zakharovna. He married and divorced the same woman, Natalia Alekseevna Reshetovskaya, twice. After their second divorce, he married Natalia Dmitrievna Svetlova who later became the mother of his three sons. One of them is Ignat Solzhenitsyn, the Russian-American conductor and pianist.
Achievements
He was the recipient of the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature. He also went on to win the Templeton Prize, State Prize of the Russian Federation and International Botev Prize.
Death
He passed away on August 3, 2008, from heart failure. He was 89.
