About Alessandro Manzoni
Alessandro Manzoni was a popular Italian poet and novelist widely known as the author of the 1827 novel titled “The Betrothed”. He developed a love for poetry at the age of 15 years which led him to write two sonnets. His first performance as a poet was around 1806 during his time at Auteuil.
In 1819, he published “Il Conte di Carmagnola” which turned out to be his maiden tragedy novel. His famous stanzas “The Fifth of May (Il Cinque maggio)”, which was inspired by Napoleon’s death, is considered as one of Italy’s most used lyrics.
Family
He was the grandson of philosopher Cesare Beccaria. His parents were Giulia Beccaria and Pietro Manzoni. The writer was married twice. The first was to Henriette Blondel. After her death, he went on to marry Teresa Borri. Out of his two marriages, he raised nine kids.
Facts
Manzoni had a great relationship with French historian Claude Charles Fauriel.
In 1822, he published his second tragedy titled “Adelchi”.
