About Alex Duthart
Alex Duthart is one of the most prominent figures in the pipe band world. He won several titles and awards throughout his career.
Life & Career
Duthart spent most of his life living at Newmains, a small Scottish village. He initially worked as a blacksmith. His father, John, was a drummer for the 8th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders infantry during the First World War. He learned how to play from his father. By the time he was 12, he was a member of the Craigneuk Parish Church Juvenile pipe band.
In 1949, he was the lead drummer of the Dalzell Highland Pipe Band and helped the band win the 1953 World Pipe Band Championships. Four years later, Duthart was tasked to form a drum corps ahead of the World Championship and the new band won the 1957 title.
He joined the British Caledonian Airways Pipe Band in 1982. While preparing to play at the 1986 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, he suffered a heart attack. The drummer died at the age of 61.
