About Alexander Bain
Alexander Bain was an inventor, known for patenting the electric clock. He is also credited with conducting experiments on the facsimile machine.
Background
Bain was born into a family of 13 in Watten, Scotland. Despite not being a good student, he excelled as an apprentice to a clockmaker.
Inventions
After learning the art and skill of clockmaking, Bain moved to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh and then later to London. He patented the electric clock in January 1841. Between 1843 and 1846, he also began to experiment with the facsimile machine.
Bain is also largely credited for inventing the chemical telegraph and for the installation of railway telegraph lines between Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Death & Legacy
He died in January 1877. A pub in the town of Wick, where Bain was a clockmaking apprentice renamed the pub “The Alexander Bain.” He posthumously received the Technology & Engineering Emmy Award in 2016.
