About Alexander Calder
Alexander Calder’s sculpture was noted for its distinct kinetic art form called a mobile. The American sculptor also made stationary public monuments. Besides sculptures, he was known for his paintings, costumes, theatre set designs, miniatures and political posters.
His works have been displayed in prime locations such as the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Gallery of Art.
Family Life
He was the third generation of the Calder family of prominent sculptors. Sculptor Alexander Milne Calder was his grandfather. He was also the son of sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder. His mother’s name was Nanette Lederer. He had two daughters with his wife, Louisa James.
Achievements
He was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977, a year after his death.
Trivia
One of his best works is his “Floating Clouds” located inside the Aula Magna auditorium in Venezuela.
