About Alexander Godunov
Just like his former classmate in the Soviet Union Mikhail Baryshnikov, Alexander Godunov became a household name in the United States as a ballet dancer and film actor. He became a member of the famous classical ballet company, Bolshoi Ballet in 1971. He eventually became the company’s premier dancer. During a New York City tour with Bolshoi in 1979, he defected from the Soviet Union and was granted asylum. In the United States, he performed with the American Ballet Theatre. He had supporting roles in the Hollywood films “Die Hard”, “Witness” and “The Money Pit”.
Personal life
He was married to Soviet ballet dancer Lyudmila Vlasova from 1971 until 1982. She had chosen to stay in the Soviet Union after his 1979 defection and it became difficult to maintain their marriage. In Hollywood, he dated actress Jacqueline Bisset from 1981 to 1988.
Achievements
In 1976, he was named an Honored Artist of the RSFSR.
Death
He was found dead in his home on May 18, 1995. His death was as a result of hepatitis caused by his heavy drinking.
