About Alexander II of Russia
Alexander II of Russia was the Emperor of Russia who was acted as the Grand Duke of Finland as well as the King of Poland. He reigned as Emperor of Russia from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. During his reign, one of his most notable achievements was his decision to emancipate Russia's serfs. This action later earned him the nickname Alexander the Liberator.
Personal Life
In 1841, he married Princess Marie of Hesse (Empress Maria Alexandrovna of Russia) with whom he fathered eight children, including Alexander III of Russia. The marriage ended with Maria's death in 1880. His second marriage was to Princess Catherine Dolgorukov, who was his mistress and with whom he had already fathered four children. The marriage lasted from 1880 until his death in 1881.
Trivia
Prior to the successful assassination attempt on his life in 1881, he had narrowly escaped several assassination attempts on his life.
