About Alexander Vampilov
Alexander Vampilov was a Russian playwright best known for writing “The Elder Son.” Some of the English versions of his plays have been performed in London and Washington DC.
Early Years
Vampilov learned how to play the mandolin and guitar when he was a young boy. In 1958, he started publishing his stories in magazines. He attended Irkutsk State University to study literature and history and after graduating, he decided to pursue a career in theatre.
Theatrical Works
His first play was “Farewell in June.” Although it didn’t do too well, he went on to have other successful plays, including “Last Summer in Chulimsk”, “The Elder Son”, and “Duck Hunting.”
Family & Death
Two days before his birthday in 1972, Vampilov went fishing with a companion and was caught in a storm. When his boat capsized, Vampilov attempted to swim back to shore but eventually drowned. He was married to Olga Vampilova and had a daughter named Elena.
