About Alexander Van der Bellen
Alexander Van der Bellen started his political career with the Social Democratic Party in the 1970s. He later joined the Green Party. In 1994, Van der Bellen was elected to the National Council, and three years later, he was elected as the Spokesman of the party.
He left the National Council in 2012, and five years later, as an independent candidate, he became Austria’s president. He’s widely admired for his support to the European Union (EU).
Family
He’s related to the famous Russian politician Aleksander von der Bellen. His parents are Alma Sieboldt and Alexander Van der Bellen, and he has a sister called Vivian-Diana. This politician divorced his first wife Brigitte Hüttner in 2015, and went on to marry renowned environmentalist Doris Schmidauer.
Education
During his time at the University of Innsbruck, he read economics.
Recognitions
He has been decorated with awards like the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
Trivia
His appointment to the presidency made him the second member of the Green Party to serve as the president of any EU country.
