About Alexandre Tansman
Regarded by some as one of the most popular Polish composers in the world, Alexandre Tansman was a globally celebrated composer, conductor, and pianist.
Early Life
Tansman was born in 1897 to a Jewish upper class family in Łódź, Poland. He started playing the piano at the age of four and he was encouraged to develop his musical talent by attending the Lodz Conservatory while studying law at the Warsaw University. This Polish genius moved to Paris to pursue his music career.
Career
Tansman started performing with other notable composers, including Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky, in Paris. He completed his first score “Impression” and “The Prelude”. He started touring and found his way to the United States where he performed his “Second Concerto” orchestra.
This virtuoso pianist soon became known for his neoclassical style of music. He took his music around the world and was honored by Mahatma Gandhi of India and Emperor Hirohito of Japan in the 1930s.
Tansman relocated to the United States during the Second World War since he was a Jew but went back to Paris after the war. In 1986, he was honored with the highest Commander grade of the Order of the Arts and the Letters.
