About Alfred Jarry
The French humorist and playwright was most famous for his 1896 play “Ubu Roi.” He was a ‘Jack of all trades and a master of ALL.’ He skilfully wrote in a variety of genres and styles. The author had several poems, plays and essays to his credit.
Early Life
Born in Laval in France, Jarry attended schools in Saint-Brieuc and Rennes. At Rennes when he was 15, he was known as a troublemaker but a brilliant student. He shared his mother’s creative genes as she was a lover of music and literature.
Writing Career
In 1985, he wrote his first play “Caesar Antichrist”, inspired by a homosexual relationship he had with French poet Leon-Paul Fargue. The theme was centred on Jesus' crucifixion and the revolt of the Roman Empire. The play did two things: it brought him fame and the character Ubu Roi was unveiled for the first time. He had major influences on writers such as Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob.
