About Alfred Kreymborg
A modernist poet, author, and editor, Alfred Kreymborg was one of the few American poets to embrace prose poetry in his time.
Early Life
Born to a cigar store owner, Alfred Kreymborg was already a master chess player by the age of ten. He also played several musical instruments, including the piano and mandolin. It was his love for music that led him to poetry.
Career
Kreymborg started writing poems as a teenager and was the first writer to be associated with Alfred Stieglitz's 291 circles (art gallery). He worked with visual artist Man Ray between 1913 and 1914 to create an avante-garde magazine The Glebe and they published ten issues of the magazine.
In 1915, he published his first book “Enda: The Girl of the Street”; the book was a bit controversial due to its obscenity. “Mushrooms: A Book of Free Forms” was his first published poetry written in free verse. He also wrote a couple of plays in his later life like “Lime Beans”, which was released in 1925, and the 1938 radio play “The Planets: A Modern Allegory”.
