About Alfred Worden
Alfred Worden was an American astronaut and engineer and in terms of the former profession one of the most-celebrated in history. He was once dubbed by Guinness World Records as being the “Most Isolated Human Being” due to at one point being on the far side of moon, well over 2000 miles away from another person (that being his astronaut comrades) and with no communication with the Earth itself.
Family Life
His parents were named Helen and Merrill Worden. He fathered three daughters by the names of Alison Penczak, Merrill Bohanning and Tamara Christians.
Achievements
In his youth he was a First Class Boy Scout.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the US Military Academy and a two Master of Science degrees and a Honorary Doctorate of Science via the University of Michigan.
As a member of the military Worden had an extensive flight history, having spent up to 2500 hours flying jets and 4000 hours flying in general.
He was part of NASA’s Apollo 15 moon landing in 1971.
At the time of his passing, he held the distinction of being one of the 24 people in history to have actually flown to the moon.
Worden received some of the greatest distinctions an astronaut can garner, such as the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, being placed in the International Space Hall of Fame, etc.
Trivia
After Apollo 15 NASA did not allow him to go into space again, apparently as punishment for unauthorized commercial activities he and his mates undertook as part of the mission.
