About Alfredo Astiz
He was an Argentine intelligence officer and maritime commando who served in the Argentine Navy during Jorge Rafael's regime. He rose to infamy for his callousness to humanity which earned him the unenviable nickname “The Blond Angel of Death.”
Crimes against Humanity
As a member of the GT. 3.3.2 of the Naval Mechanics School, he was responsible for the torture of about 5,000 political prisoners. He infiltrated the Mothers of the Plazo de Mayo human rights organisation and led in the abduction and killing of three persons. Following his surrender to British troops in the wake of the 1982 Falklands War, a French court convicted him in absentia for crimes against humanity and was jailed for life. His charges included murder, torture and kidnapping.
Personal Life
Although he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004, the Supreme Court denied him access to be treated at the Pedro Mallo Naval Hospital.
