About Alfredo Stroessner
Alfredo Stroessner was a former Paraguayan president in 1954 and ruled as a dictator until he was overthrown and exiled in 1989.
Early Life and Political Career
Stroessner was born to a German father and a Paraguayan mother. He began his military career at the start of the Chaco War with Bolivia. He rose through the ranks from military college cadet in 1932 to general-in-division in 1951. Three years later, he was at the forefront of a coup d’état that overthrew then-president Federico Cháves. Soon after taking office, Stroessner held the country under siege and suspended civil liberties. Six months into his eighth full term, he was overthrown by his closest friend, General Andrés Rodríguez. He fled to Brazil and lived in exile there for the rest of his life until his death in 2006 at 93.
Family
Stroessner married Eligia Mora, and they had three children: Gustavo, Alfredo, and Graciela. The couple was forced to separate after he was exiled, with Eligia spending the rest of her life in the United States.
Scandals
Before and during his presidency, Stroessner was involved in several extra-marital affairs. According to sources, he had affairs with girls as young as 13 years, and he might have fathered over 30 illegitimate children. This revelation made him extremely unpopular in Paraguay.
