About Algernon Sidney
Sidney was a 17th English think tank and arguably the most illustrious martyr in history. A radical Republican, he authored “Discourses Concerning Government” to challenge the reasoning of Robert Filmer, an advocate of absolute monarchy.
Early Years
Born to a diplomat father in London, he was elected to Parliament in 1646.
Notable Facts
He became a member of the Council of State in 1652 but refused to be part of the court that tried Charles I. He abstained from politics during the Protectorate and was abroad in diplomatic business at the time of King Charles II's Restoration in 1660. He joined the Whigs of Shaftesbury and took bribes from Louis XIV to oppose Charles II. He faced trial in 1683 for his participation in the Rye House plot. Though convicted, it was on inconclusive evidence. Later that year, he was executed for the alleged plot to kill King Charles II.
Legacy
Like philosopher John Locke, Sidney’s work set the tone for Western philosophies. He was a man who fought for justice, not vengeance and defended the rights of the people to bring an end to a corrupt government. He kicked against absolutism.
