About Alice Palmer
Between 1991 and 1997, Alice Palmer served on the Illinois Senate. The American politician eventually lost her seat to Barack Obama in the 1997 elections.
Education & Career
After graduating from high school at age 26, Palmer went to Indiana University and received her degree in English and sociology in 1965. She later attended Roosevelt University to earn her master’s in urban studies and moved to Northwestern University for her PhD in educational administration.
During her PhD studies, she wrote two books and was also appointed as the Associate Dean, as well as Director of African American Student Affairs. She was heavily involved in youth activities and in 1986, she founded the Chicago YMCA Youth and Government Program.
In 1991, she won a seat in the Illinois Senate. During her tenure, she served on various committees. After leaving the senate, she continued teaching at the University of Illinois before retiring.
