Writing a memoir as an expression of her experience as a rape victim and how she struggled through life after the incident, Alice Sebold is a well-known American author. She is best remembered for her works in the Best Seller novel, “The Lovely Bones”.
Early Life
Her father worked as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and her mother was a local journalist. Her mother suffered from alcoholism and severe panic attacks. Alice Sebold and her sister took care of her.
In 1984, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University in New York. She also attended the University of Houston and the University of California, Irvine. From the latter, she earned a Master of Fine Arts.
Her Rape Case
In 1981, during Sebold’s freshman year at Syracuse University, on her way home from studies, she was attacked and raped by an unknown assailant in a tunnel leading to an amphitheater. This experience scared her and sent shockwaves throughout campus as authorities struggled to find the alleged rapist wasn’t.
About five months after the assault was reported to the police, Sebold accused a man she had encountered while on campus as her rapist. The accused was Anthony Broadwater, who continuously claimed his innocence years later after being incarcerated.
“Lucky”
Her memoir, “Lucky”, released in 1999, talked about her experience that early hour on campus. It described details of her rape in a more graphic manner. It was more of an eyewitness view of what she went through, what her assailant did to her, and the trauma after that. In the memoir, the author reveals to readers the interactions she had with investigative journalists and police officers.
The Release of Broadwater
In 2021, Broadwater was released from prison by a New York Supreme Court Justice after Timothy Mucciante, a film producer, who identified certain inconsistencies in the story told by Sebold in her memoir. As a result, another investigation was conducted to unearth the truth.
