About Alla Nazimova
Alla Nazimova was the stage name of Marem-Ides Leventon, a Russian-American actress, screenwriter, director and producer. She began her career as a member of the Moscow Art Theatre. Following the failure of a Russian-language theatre she co-founded with her then-actor and producer boyfriend Pavel Orlenev, she debuted on Broadway in 1906 and became a star almost instantly. She appeared in her first film, “War Brides” in 1916. Other films she starred in include “Salomé, “Eye for Eye”, “Camille” and “Madame Peacock”.
Personal Life
At 8 years old, her mother, Sarah Leivievna Gorowitz and father, Yakov Abramovich Leventon divorced. She had two older siblings. She was married to British actor-director Charles Bryant from 1912 to 1925. She also gained notoriety for her numerous lesbian relationships with the likes of Jean Acker, Glesca Marshall, Eva Le Gallienne, Dolly Wilde, Dorothy Arzner and Mercedes de Acosta.
Death
She died on July 13, 1945 from coronary thrombosis.
