Prior to reinventing himself as a party planner, he worked at Playboy magazine. He co-created the Playboy Penthouse television series.

He established Allan Carr Enterprises in 1966. Through this company, he managed performers Michelle Pfeiffer, Joan Rivers, and many others.
He produced the 61st Annual Academy Awards.
