About Allen Ludden
Renowned TV host Allen Ludden was primarily known for hosting game shows such as the “Password”, which he hosted in the 1960s and 1970s.
Family and Education
He was the son of Elmer Ellsworth and Leila M. Allen. He had his education at the University of Texas.
Ludden was married to Margaret McGloin but after the loss of his wife in 1961, he began a new marital relationship with Betty White in 1963. He had three children namely David, Sarah and Martha.
Career Highlights
After he graduated from the university, he joined the United States Army and served as a performer at the Pacific Theatre. As a result of his good work, he left the Army in 1946 with the rank of captain.
He began his career by working as a columnist for radio and magazines. He also hosted teen shows on radio and one of these shows was known as “Mind Your Manners”.
His big break came when he started hosting game shows such as “College Bowl” and “Password”. The second mentioned game was aired on the CBS and ABC channels. There was an upgraded version of the show called “Password Plus”. Ludden started to host the upgraded version but due to some personal issues and illness, he had to leave the show.
Other notable shows that this American media personality hosted include: “Win with the Stars” and the “Liar’s Club”.
Achievements
Ludden received the Peabody Award in 1950 for hosting the show “Mind Your Manners”.
He was also awarded the Horatio Alger Award in 1961.
Death
He died at age 63 as a result of stomach cancer.
Trivia
He mostly used the phrase “Hi doll” as an opening act in his shows. The phrase was directed to his mother-in-law Tess White.
