About Alonzo Mourning
Eleven out of Alonzo Harding Mourning Jr’s fifteen-year career as an NBA player were spent with the Miami Heats. Also popularly referred to as Zo, he made his debut in the league with the Charlotte Hornets, which selected him in the 1992 draft. He was traded to the Heats in November 1995 and had a one-year stint with the New Jersey Nets beginning in 2003. In 2005, he returned to the Heats, where he retired in early 2009. He has been an executive of the Miami Heats since June 2009.
Family Life
He was raised in Chesapeake, Virginia. He has three children from his marriage to ex-wife Tracy. In December 2003, his cousin Jason Cooper donated his left kidney to him.
Achievements
He is the first player in the history of Miami Heats to have his jersey number (33) retired. He played in 7 All-Star games and won the NBA’s “Defensive Player of the Year” award twice.
Trivia
He founded the Alonzo Mourning Charities Inc. in 1997.
