About Álvaro Uribe
Álvaro Uribe, a Colombian politician who served as president from 2002 to 2010, was born on July 4, 1952 in Medelln, Colombia. He graduated from the University of Antioquia in Medellín with a law degree and went on to Harvard University to study management and administration.
Political career
He served in the state administration of Antioquia in the mid-1970s before serving as secretary-general of the Ministry of Labour in Medellín and as a national director of civil aeronautics. From 1982 to 1984, he was the mayor of Medellín. Between 1986 and 1994, Uribe served as a national senator. After eight years in the senate, he was elected governor of Antioquia, a position he would hold from 1995 to 1997.
Presidency
Uribe ran for president as an independent, breaking away from the previously dominating Liberal Party. He founded the Colombia First electoral movement and used the slogan "Firm Hand, Big Heart" for his campaign. When Colombians went to the polls on May 26, 2002, he received 53.1 percent of the vote thanks to the effectiveness of his campaign approach.
Explosions shook the centre of Colombia's city, Bogotá, on August 7, the day Uribe formally took office as president. Uribe announced a state of emergency and boosted Colombia's military and police forces shortly after taking office.
After two terms in office, he was succeeded by Juan Manuel Santos in 2010.
He was named vice-chairman of the UN commission that investigated the Gaza flotilla raid in 2010.
Uribe and his political supporters created the right-wing Democratic Center organization in 2012 to run in the national elections of 2014. In the 2014 legislative election, he was elected senator and began office in July.
