About Amy Lowell
One year after her death, Amy Lowell won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her poem collection called “What’s O’Clock.” Her most famous poem was “The Garden by Moonlight.”
Life
Lowell was born into an Episcopalian family in Massachusetts and was the youngest of five children. She initially received formal education at home before enrolling in boarding school. She started writing at a young age.
Together with her mother and sister, Lowell wrote “Dream Drops or Stories from Fairy Land by a Dreamer” in 1887. In the 1910s, she published her poems in journals. She was a keen follower of the Imagist movement, founded by Ezra Pound and adopted some of its ideals and principles into her literary works.
Relationships
Lowell was in a relationship with Ada Dwyer Russell, who often served as the poet’s muse for many of her poems.
