Nationalist Liberal Party Leader Anastasio Somoza Debayle was known for his dictatorial rule as the president of Nicaragua from 1967 to 1972 and from 1974 to 1979. Due to his dictatorship, he was assassinated in 1980.
Early Life and Military Education
The dictator lived a modest life growing up. He was enrolled in the Pedagógico La Salle Christian School at the age of 7 years. Debayle later had his education in the United States with his brother, Luis Somoza Debayle, at the St. Leo College Prep and later enrolled at the La Salle Military Academy. In 1943, he received admission into the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), graduating in 1946.
His father, Anastasio Somoza García, ruled Nicaragua from 1937 to 1947, and from 1950 to 1956. Following his father’s assassination in 1956, his older brother, Luis Somoza Debayle, became ruler of the country. Luis Somoza Debayle was president from 1956 to 1963.
Dictatorship
Anastasio Debayle took over the Nicaraguan government after his brother's death in 1967 and ruled till 1972. He was accused of embezzlement, abuse of power, and engaged in multiple counts of corruption. He used his power and influence to stand and win another tenure of office from 1974 to 1979. By this time, there was a lot of agitation from the people of Nicaragua, but all complaints fell on deaf ears.
Personal Life and Death
Anastasio Debayle married Hope Portocarrero in 1950 and had 5 children. He died in 1980, aged 54. The dictator had been assassinated by the Sandinista commando team in an ambush.
Trivia
He attended the same school with Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal, a Nicaraguan journalist who became a staunch critic of his dictatorial rule. Cardenal, who worked for the newspaper La Prensa, was killed during the final few years of
Anastasio Debayle’s rule.
Upon returning from his military training in the United States, Anastasio was appointed the head of the National Guard by his father.
