About Anatoly Karpov
Anatoly Karpov started garnering attention at age 16 when he was crowned the winner of the 1967 edition of the Niemeyer Tournament which was held in Groningen, Netherlands. Two years later, he won the prestigious World Junior Championship, earning him the title “international master”.
He rose to fame in 1971 after beating a number of great players to win the Alekhine Memorial tournament staged in Moscow. He became a World Champion in 1975, and reached the top of the FIDE rankings the following year after his fine performances at some major tournaments.
International career
This legend also played for his country at some international competitions. With the USSR, he won six Chess Olympiads, and two World Chess championships.
Political career
Aside from chess, Karpov has also been involved in politics in his native Russia. In 2006, he was appointed as the chairman of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation’s Commission on Ecology and Environment Protection. The following year, he joined the Public Council which was operated by the Ministry of Defence. He has also served in the Duma.

This famous chess player has been married to a woman called Natalia.
Achievements
He became a member of the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1984, he won his ninth Chess Oscars from the International Association of Chess Press. His other awards include the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, and the Order of Holy Prince Daniel of Moscow.
