Andrae Edward Crouch, professionally called Andrae Crouch, was a highly revered figure of American gospel music. He was a preacher, record producer, arranger, and award-winning gospel musician, earning the reputation as the “Father of Modern Gospel Music.”
Background & Early Life
The Gospel star was exposed to Christianity and gospel music very early, composing his first gospel song at 14. Additionally, Crouch played the piano in church and was considered a divinely gifted instrumentalist.
Career Highlights & Major Awards
He officially began his music career after founding the “Church of God in Christ Singers.” Then in 1965, he founded the famous “The Disciples” group. His career ultimately went global, and he toured in over 60 countries. Several of his songs during those decades have maintained their popularity in the 21st century, including “Soon and Very Soon,” “Through It All,” and “The Blood Will Never Lose its Power.”
He produced for many megastars such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Elton John. Additionally, he had music credits on “The Lion King” and “The Color Purple.” He also pastored the “New Christ Memorial Church of God in Christ” in California.
He was a Gospel Music Hall of Famer and won eight Grammys and six GMA dove awards.
Cause of Death
He died in January of 2015, aged 72, after a heart attack.
