When it comes to story writing, Andre Norton is generally regarded as the first female Gandalf Grand Master of fantasy. The Ohio-born sci-fi and fantasy writer penned works such as “Quag Keep” and “Three Hands for Scorpio”.
Background and Education
Born by Adalbert Freely Norton and Bertha Stemm Norton as Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, the veteran novelist had her schooling at Collinwood High School in Cleveland. She went on to school at Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University for some time and left in 1932.
Her Writing Highlights
She started writing in high school under the tutorship of Sylvia Cochrane. In high school, she wrote short stories in the school’s paper as she was an editor of the literary page. The “female Gandalf” worked for 18 years in the children’s section of the Nottingham Branch Library in Cleveland. She again worked as a special librarian in the cataloguing department of the Library of Congress. Some of her notable books include; ”The Prince Commands”(1934), “The people of the Crater”, “Huon of the Horn”, “Follow the Drum”(1942), “Scarface”(1948), and “Yankee Privateer”(1955).
Her Awards
The former fantasy writer achieved many accolades including;
- Two Hugo Awards nominations in 1964
- Three World Fantasy Award nominations for lifetime achievement and actually won the award in 1998.
Death
Andre died of congestive heart failure in 2005, aged 93.
