About Andrea Doria
Andrea Doris is known for being one of the world’s most prominent naval officers in the medieval era. He played a key role in the maritime country, the Republic of Genoa, where he served as its ruler.
Background
Doria belonged to the Doria de Oneglia family, an extension of the noble Doria family. His parents passed away when he was a young boy. He later became a soldier of fortune, hired by King Ferdinand I and later by several other Italian princes.
In the early 1500s, Doria rose to fame when he joined the Genoese Navy and helped his uncle put an end to the Corsican revolt against Genoa. He spent many years at sea commanding the Genoese fleet and defeating the Turks in Pianosa. Despite having worked with the French for several years, Doria eventually grew disillusioned with their policies and in 1528, drove them out of his home country.
Achievements
Several ships and liners have been named after Doria due to his impressive naval accomplishments:
- Two US Navy ships were named USS Andrew Doria in 1775 and 1908.
- The Italian battleship “Andrea Doria” served in both World Wars and was later decommissioned in 1956.
- The passenger liner “SS Andrea Doria” sank in a collision in 1956.
