About Andreas Baader
German-born Andreas Bernd Baader is mostly known for being one of the most famous terrorists of the 1970s. He was the leader of the terrorist group Red Army Faction (RAF).
Early Life and Criminal Career
Baader grew up in Munich and attended several secondary schools before dropping out for good. In 1963, he moved to Berlin and five years later, his girlfriend Gudrun Ensslin introduced him to the local student protest scene, where he began to actively participate in political activities.
In 1968, together with his girlfriend and two other persons, Baader was arrested for arson after setting two stores on fire in Frankfurt. After his appeal was rejected, he fled the country with Ensslin. He was rearrested when he returned to Berlin in 1970, but escaped with help from journalist Ulrike Meinhof.
Baader traveled to Jordan, where he trained at a terrorist camp before returning to Germany to perform a series of robberies. His gang, RAF, was also responsible for several bombings between 1970 and 1972. He was captured in 1972 and his trial is regarded as the longest and most expensive in German history.
Death
In 1977, Baader and another gang member were found dead in their cells. His girlfriend was also found dead in her cell. While the official investigation ruled their deaths as suicide, several members of the RAF gang accused the German authorities of killing them.
